The Silent Work

Series of 3 sculptures, plaster, plastic (2017)

Sculptures of body parts merged with maintenance equipment. ‘Invisible labour’ such as caring and maintenance work often goes unnoticed as it’s a labour of re-production rather than production – it maintains the existing conditions rather than creating new outputs. This series of sculptures attempts to visualise or materialise the idea of invisible work, and to merge the tools with the body as a reflection on the working body as a tool. The white sculptures protrude from the white walls of the converted mill storage space at Assembly House, like an echo from the past slipping into view.
