”…det syntes mellan dem ha existerat en svärmisk flickvänskap med något öfverspändt i sig.” - DN 1911
This work is a digital re-memorialisation of the two young women depicted in the statue, the then 16 year old local working class girls Lilly Olivia Sundberg and Anna Elisabeth Ström. One day in 1911 they were discovered to have bound themselves together and ended their own lives in Hammarby Sjö.
Sculptor Nils Sjögren was inspired by this tragic story when creating this statue in 1945. The title “the sisters“ is however misleading - these young women were said to be inseperable and it is most likely that they had a forbidden romantic relationship. Author Mian Lodalen has dramaticised their love story in the 2021 novel “Lisa och Lilly“.
De älskande (the lovers) imagines the spirits of these young women reawakening, embracing and dancing together, as a way to recognise and celebrate the intense loving bond they shared in their brief lifetimes.
